Welcome, Nubia!!
Q: Why did you join the Tichenor Board of Directors (BOD)?
A: I joined the Tichenor BOD because I believe in our mission statement and any opportunity that I have to support their work and families, I am honored to do so. My family is a former Tichenor family and during our time there not only did my son receive excellent early intervention services, it was where he had his first “preschool” experience with other kids. It was a fun and enriching experience for my son, a place where he could be a kid all while getting the services he needed and it was the first place that as a mother, I got to connect and be in community with other moms. For our family, it was our first true, family community. Joining the Tichenor BOD will hopefully allow me to help support the wonderful work being done, but also give back to the community that gave us so much.
Q: What is helping you through this difficult time of the pandemic?
A: Focusing on my blessings and our family’s blessings. On days where I’ve hit the pandemic wall, a walk outside at our local park helps, listening to music or just my own steps and then coming home and just seeing my family together helps to center me. We are all home, we are all safe and we’re just going to roll with it. Flexibility and grace has been key for our family. I think about how maybe years from now, I’ll look back on this year and think about that scary time when the world slowed down and we hunkered down together and all the quality time we had as a family. We have our share of stressful days, but we try to give ourselves space to take a break and decompress and then keep going the next day.
Q: What do you hope to accomplish as part of the Board of Directors?
A: I hope to help lift up Tichenor in our community, helping to raise awareness about the great work we do for kids and their families. I hope to help increase community partnerships and continue to cultivate the wonderful family community here. I hope to help increase support for programs that are essential to kids and increase parent engagement and advocacy.
Q: What other work/organizations are you involved in outside of Tichenor?
A: In addition to working at Long Beach Forward as the Lead Parent Organizer, I am Chairperson/Commissioner on the City of Long Beach’s Citizens Advisory Commission on Disabilities, I am a parent member of the LBUSD Community Advisory Committee, LBUSD Equity Leadership Team, Neighborhood Leadership Program Alumni, Co-Creator/Organizer of Step Up Step Out Long Beach, Long Beach Suffrage 100, Women of Long Beach, Democratic Women’s Study Club Chairperson of Emerson Parkside Academy’s School Site Council, PTA Mom.
Q: Any other personal tidibits you’d like to share?
A: I am a great cook, but not so good at baking. I love gardening and hugging trees. I am a self-proclaimed Bibliophile and Film Nerd, love reading and movies. In my former life I used to work in the film industry. I love to run marathons for fun. And even though my son finds it embarrassing, I love to dance and do car karaoke. Current Loteria Family Champion!
