Does Language Color the Way We see Autism? ![]() A boy wearing a red and black plaid shirt and eyeglasses showing his toy car collection on shelves. A still image from the video linked below. We heard through a recent survey that many of you are interested in more articles on disabilities and research on disabilities! This article from the AAC Language Lab is written by an autistic person and discusses how medicalized language can be limiting and de-humanizing.
And if you enjoyed thinking about the "budding herpetologist" in Lance's article above, you might also enjoy this video about a talented boy who loves cars!
If you come across something you think our readers would enjoy, send them along! We'd love to share!
PS: Here at Tichenor Clinic, we are always eager to learn and grow. We know that there is debate around terms used to describe disabilities (here is a great one about Identity-First Language).
So we want to hear from you. Have you been diagnosed with autism or have a loved one diagnosed with autism? If so, which do you prefer?
Marlee Matlin's "CODA" up for Best Picture at the Academy Awards! ![]() A still from of four family members standing in a crowd and clapping from the film CODA. Courtesy of Sundance Institute.
Marlee Matlin, who won an Oscar at 21 for Children of a Lesser God, is out with a new film called "CODA." After winning SAG Awards for Outstanding Male Actor in a Supporting Role for Troy Kotsur (the first deaf actor to win this award) and Best Ensemble for the entire cast, the film has now been nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. CODA stands for Child of Deaf Adults, and the film features a family - two Deaf parents, a Deaf son, and daughter who is hearing - whose life in a small fishing town we witness as the daughter aspires to become a singer.
Read an interview with Matlin here, and read some reception of the film from the Deaf community here.
April Calendar Is Up! Up on our website and on the bulletin board near the pool you can find our monthly group class calendars!
You do not need to be an existing Tichenor client to participate in group classes. This is a great way to access services if you are on our waitlist or have been discharged and just miss us! :-)
