Sesame Place San Diego Now Open! ![]() Image from Sesame Place, San Diego, with two children holding hands with Cookie Monster and Elmo The first Sesame Street theme park has opened on the West Coast: Sesame Place San Diego! The park has been designated as a Certified Autism Center (CAC) by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES) and will mirror Sesame Place Philadelphia, which was the first theme park in the world to achieve this designation.Staff-wide autism sensitivity and awareness training will be completed prior to the park’s debut, and robust pre-visit planning resources, including a park-specific sensory guide will be featured on its website, making it easier for parents to plan activities that satisfy their child’s specific needs and accommodations. Designated quiet spaces with comfortable seating will also be incorporated into the park’s design.
The park is the latest step by Orlando, Florida-based SeaWorld to move away from live animal shows, which had drawn worldwide criticism over its impact on whales, and prompted profits to plunge, especially at its San Diego park. SeaWorld announced the end of its orca breeding program in March 2016, after years of pressure from animal rights advocates and shifting public opinion about orcas being held in captivity.
