Thank you for your support in 2021!! |
Congratulations, Daniela!! |
Daniela at her graduation |
Daniela just graduated from high school on June 15 and, like Oscar featured in our 2021 Impact Report, is attending Cal State Long Beach in the fall!
In her own words:
"I've learned that it is important to advocate for yourself because that is how you get the things that you really want. Also you can let people know what you need so they can help you. It was hard for me and it still is a little hard to advocate for myself but with all the support that I got from my mom, Tichenor, and Mayra [Jimenez, Tichenor's Director of Administration & Family Services], I was able to transition from special education to general education classes.
Tichenor has helped me so much and thanks to everyone there I am able to graduate from high school and go to college. From physical therapy when I was a baby and toddler to the Rich Kempster Swim Program where I was later able to volunteer, to even helping me with my writing skills. You've helped and supported me in any way possible. Because of Tichenor, I plan to study to becoming a therapist or a nurse to help others. Thank you for everything!"
Congratulations, Daniela! We're so very proud of you! |
Calling all nature lovers ~ Yosemite is coming to Tichenor! |
It's time!!!
Last summer, muralist Brian McAllister came to Tichenor Clinic to transform our pool walls. Children love swimming surrounded by their sea animal friends. Brian has just arrived to transform our physical therapy gym into Yosemite Valley!
Would you like to try your hand at painting a tree, a stretch of rock, a morning sky? No experience necessary! To find out our painting schedule, email us! |
Introducing Jessie Goldstein! |
We are delighted to welcome Jessie Goldstein to our team! Get to know Jessie! Hi Jessie! Can you tell us why you became a speech-language pathologist?
I wanted to become a speech language pathologist because I enjoy working with children, and I think communication is so important in every aspect of our lives. I love the idea that I can be a part of helping a child improve their communication, and all the positives that come along with that.
What attracted you to Tichenor Clinic for Children?
I loved the idea of being able to provide services to whatever families needed them, regardless of ability to pay. I also enjoy how many different services are provided at Tichenor, and I can already tell how beneficial it is to have an interdisciplinary team here to support each child.
What is your favorite place in Long Beach? I love to go to Rosie's Dog Beach with my dog!
What is something fun you've done this summer or that you look forward to doing this summer? I am looking forward to more camping trips this summer.
What do you like to do in your free time? I swing dance! I am also an avid reader and enjoy camping. Anything else you would like to share with us? I'm very happy to be joining the team! |

Hundreds of families seek speech-language therapy services for their children every year, and many of them seek the support of assistive communication devices. There are many different kinds!
No-tech and low-tech options include things like: gestures and facial expressions writing drawing spelling words by pointing to letters pointing to photos, pictures, or written words High-tech options include things like: using an app on an iPad or tablet to communicate using a computer with a “voice," sometimes called a speech-generating device |

Down Syndrome & Alzheimer's Research |

From NPR's All Things Considered: For Frank Stephens, 40, the effort to defeat Alzheimer's is personal. One reason is that the disease has left his mother "almost childlike," he says. "It is very hard to see." Also, as a person with Down syndrome, Stephens knows that he is likely to develop Alzheimer's much earlier than his mother did. So he raises money for Alzheimer's research through the Global Down Syndrome Foundation and he takes part in research studies through the group's Human Trisome Project. Stephens' goal is to help find a drug that stops Alzheimer's. "That would be amazing," he says. "I'm hoping I can do that for my mother."
