Emerick: “Dad! Watch me! See what I can do??”

Dec152022
Stories

My son Emerick was born with a dislocated hip. It caused him a lot of pain as he grew. When Emerick was 5 years old, Dr. Chang (an orthopedic surgeon at Miller Children’s Hospital and Tichenor Clinic’s Medical Director) determined that he needed hip surgery; without it, Emerick would suffer many complications as he continued to grow. The surgery went smoothly and at discharge the hospital gave us a bucket of Tylenol. We were amazed that Emerick never once complained about the pain that he must have had. That bucket remains full.

We were referred to Tichenor Clinic for rehabilitation. Emerick was afraid of physical therapy and hospitals. And because he had been using a wheelchair for four months, it took him a while to trust his own body to safely get him from one point to another. But from the time we started at Tichenor with our physical therapist Ms. Wendy, all we saw were possibilities. Ms. Wendy helped strengthen his body as well as his confidence to begin using a walker.

It was around then that Emerick started kindergarten! His mother and I were so worried about him. But it was being in school that really motivated him. Using his walker at school, he would knock into things and people. He couldn’t participate in soccer or running like he could prior to surgery. And he sat alone on a bench during recess while others played. He told us he wanted to work hard at therapy to get better.

There was one day at the clinic a few months later that I will never forget. Emerick had become comfortable and even fast with his walker, but Ms. Wendy believed he was ready to walk independently. This new transition was especially scary for him. Ms. Wendy showed Emerick what he was capable of as they walked around the clinic. They walked outside the clinic and into the parking lot when something clicked and Emerick let go of his fear. He walked on his own, shouting, “Dad! Watch me! See what I can do??” It’s hard to describe the emotion I felt in that moment.

We recently found out that Emerick has to have another surgery to remove the metal from the first surgery. He’s nervous but feels ready to face this next challenge because he knows he can! He is able to walk with us at the grocery store, at the park, and even walk around school without any help. He independently works on his balance and strengthening exercises at home and is working with physical therapist Ms. Karsti now on jumping!

We are so grateful to Tichenor Clinic for Children. Emerick can hold his head high, fall, and get back up without questioning his strength or ability, which is a lesson that he will carry with him for his whole life. As his parents, we have learned how to communicate with our child ahead of his surgery, to take the time to explain what is going to happen and why. It’s so important to create a trusting relationship. Thank you to Dr. Chang, Ms. Wendy, Ms. Karsti and Tichenor Clinic for showing all of us that Emerick is stronger than we know, and for helping him become the proud boy that he is today.

My Hijo Emerick

Camino solo hacía mi y me dijo, “Papa!
